      Another Pioneer Passes Away

Death claimed another pioneer of Calumet County when Carl Wettstein answered the summons at his home in Charlesburg on Saturday, May 20th, at the age of seventy-eight years. Mr. Wettstein had been in failing health for a year past, but was able to be up and around.
Carl Wettstein was a native of Austria and was born in that country in 1848. In 1856 he came to this country with his parents the late Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Wettstein who located in the woods in what is known as Marytown, town of Calumet, Fond du Lac county.
On January 1867 he was married to Anna Kutzer at St. Mary's church, Marytown, and the same year they moved onto the farm now owned by his son, Frank C. Wettstein, in the town of Stockbridge. Through his diligence and thrift he succeeded in building up a fine property and in 1906 having sufficient of the world's goods to maintain himself and wife in comfort, he retired from active labor and purchased a home at Charlesburg where they have since lived until death separated them on Saturday.
Five years ago on Jan. 10, 1917, Mr. And Mrs. Wettstein celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Charlesburg and at that time all members of the family were home to make the reunion complete. For the past year Mr. Wettstein has been suffering from ill health but was sick abed only about a week previous to his death.
He is survived by his wife and eleven children; Frank C. of Stockbridge town, Joseph C. and Michael of Wahpeton; Henry of Charlesburg; August and Otto of Long Prairie, Minn.; Mrs. Thomas Schiller of Wahpeton, N.D.; Sister Petonia of Waterloo, Ont.; Sister Euphrasia of Catherine, Kansas; Mrs. Frank Boll, East Brothertown.
The funeral was held on Tuesday morning from St. Charles church in Charlesburg, with interment in St. Charles cemetery, Rev. Fr. P.J. Nilles officiating.
