- Merton (Mert) Anthony Hartjes, 88, of Rudolph, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.
Visitation will be at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, in Rudolph on May 4 beginning at 8 a.m. with Mass following at 11 a.m. The Rev. Rolando Onden and The Rev. Chester Osowski will be officiating the Mass.
Mert was born on Dec. 1, 1924, in the town of Carson to Sylvester and Marie (Dorshorst) Hartjes. He married Louise Zimmerman on July 20, 1946, at St. Philip Church in Rudolph.
Mert worked at the Biron Paper Mill for 15 years, while running a fulltime dairy farm, which was his lifelong labor of love. He was also well known in the community for his masonry and carpentry work. He served as a firefighter for the Rudolph Volunteer Fire Department for 29 years. He was a veteran member of the Catholic Order of Foresters of St. Philip Church.
Mert is survived by Louise, his wife of 66 years, and their five children: Larry (Kathy) Hartjes, Rudolph; Connie (Dave) Jagodzinski, Port Edwards; Roger (Cindy) Hartjes, Rudolph; Kris (Jerry) Willfahrt, Rudolph; and Jackie (Phil) Slattery, Rudolph. He is further survived by 13 grandchildren: Taryn (Chad) Fuller, Tana (Kyle)Nelsen, Dana (Bob) Lex, Brian (Terri) Jagodzinski, Jessica (Ron) Adamski, Ed (Fiancee Colleen) Hartjes, Jen (Ian) Wilkins, Mike (Amy) Willfahrt, Anne (Rob) Teska, Rose Slattery, Nina Slattery, Rachael Slattery, and Natalie Slattery. There are 13 great-grandchildren.
Mert was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Marie Hartjes, one sister, Clarice Peters, two brothers, Marvin and Wayne, and one grandson, Gabriel Hartjes.
One of Merts favorite past times was going to Sunday School with his friends. He also loved chasing parts in his green truck for 34 Truck & Auto in Rudolph. He was a Good Samaritan to all. Anyone needing help could count on him at a moments notice. He will be remembered as a fun-loving, jokester with a kind heart.
