- Mrs. Mary A. Van Handel

Age 91, died Tuesday, January 4, 1994 following a brief illness. She was born on June 22, 1902 in Little Chute, the daughter of the late Arnold and Lena (Williamson) Van Handel. Mary married Joseph Van Handel on June 22, 1925. He preceded her in death on May 15, 1964. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church and its Christian Mothers Society; Harvey Pierre VFW Post #2778 Auxiliary; and a former member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom. Mary enjoyed knitting and making dolls and stuffed animals for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law: Julia (Stephen) Preisler, Hortonville, Irene (Philip) Schneidewend, Gillett; Dorothy (Gerald) Plutz, Appleton; Dolores (Ronald) Nussbaum, Appleton; Rosie (Robert) Weiland, Hortonville; Margaret (Ivo) Liebergen, Kaukauna; six sons and four daughters-in-law: Arnold (Geraldine) Van Handel, Appleton; Clarence (Mary) Van Handel, Appleton; Norbert Van Handel, Larsen; Alois (Romae) Van Handel, Appleton; Marvin Van Handel and his special friend, Carol Morgan, Larsen; Tony (Kathy) Van Handel, Appleton; five brothers: Joseph (Harriet) Van Handel, Greenville; Ted Van Handel, Kimberly; John (Mary) Van Handel, Appleton; Henry (Lee) Van Handel, Appleton; Ed (Lorraine) Van Handel, Kaukauna; three sisters: Josephine Evers, Appleton; Gertrude Verkuilen, Appleton; and Margaret Phillips, Weyauwega. She is also survived by 69 grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Martin; a sister, Agnes; four grandchildren; two brothers-in-law: Jake Verkuilen and Sylvester Phillips; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Van Handel. The Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, January 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church at the corner of Wisconsin and Morrison with Fr. Daniel Gilsdorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home on Thursday (TODAY) from 4 until 8 p.m. and directly at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. VFW Auxiliary services will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. followed by a parish prayer and scripture service at 7:30 p.m. A memorial fund is being established.
