    • Esther C. Karls, age 92, passed away peacefully at Appleton Medical Center on Thursday, January 6, 2011. She was born in Kaukauna on March 2, 1918; daughter of the late George and Anna (Vandenberg) VandenHeuvel. On January 4, 1940, she married Lawrence Bauer; he preceded her in death on September 11, 1956. On September 5, 1966, she married Benedict "Ben" Karls; he preceded her in death on December 15, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John; sisters Edna and Rosemary.

      She will be missed by her children: Roy Bauer, Appleton; John Bauer, Milwaukee; Steve (Diane) Bauer, Stevens Point; Mary (Tom) Sommers, Appleton, stepchildren: Joyce (John) Giebel, Fond du Lac; Diane Nett (Joseph) Malone; Audrey (Jim) Schaefer, Oakfield; Karen Karls, Chilton; Gerald (Lorraine) Karls, Chilton; Allen (Donna) Karls, Charlesburg; Ron (Sue) Karls, Mt. Calvary; grandchildren: Jeff Bauer, Jennifer (John) Eberhardt, John (Heidi) Bauer, Julie (Mark) Luther, Ryan (Lori) Sommers, Eric (Jennifer) Sommers, Brian Bauer; nine great-grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers: Raymond (Florence) VandenHeuvel, Appleton; Cyril "Bud" VandenHeuvel, Kaukauna; George VandenHeuvel, Appleton; sisters: Myra (Orv) Mueller, Appleton; Therese VanCamp, Freedom; Adele (Tom), Kaukauna; and a sister-in-law Veronica Jochman; other relatives and friends.
      In her early years, Esther was an avid artist in oil painting. Esther also enjoyed playing cards, trips to the cottage on Pickerel Lake, and many happy times with her family members.
      A Mass of Christian Burial for Esther will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald St., Appleton. Family and friends may visit at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the mass.
      The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Doctors Danz, Culligan, and White of the Kaukauna Clinic, and the doctors and staff of Appleton Medical Center for their care and kindness. She was a long-time member of St. Thomas More. Thank you to Father Falk for his many years of kindness. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been set up for St. Thomas More parish.
