- John Joseph Walsh, age 93, of Neenah passed away on Wednesday evening, July 6, 2016 at The Heritage CBRF, surrounded by his loving family, just in time to celebrate Betty's 92nd Birthday. He was born on April 30, 1923 in Appleton, son of the late Eugene J. and Anna M. (Finnegan) Walsh. He graduated from Appleton West High School in 1941 and continued his education at Lawrence University, then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Because Jack couldn't pass the eye test to become a pilot, he was transferred to Brigham Young University for training, then when that program was cancelled, he ended up in the infantry and was sent overseas to serve as Platoon Sgt. with Patton's 3rd Army. He rode with the Navy Ducks in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in the European Theatre of WWII with the 7th Army in France and Germany. He was awarded three battle stars, a bronze star, and a combat infantry badge for his service. Jack was honorably discharged in December of 1945 with the rank of Tech Sargeant.
On October 16, 1948 he married Beatrice "Betty" Neff at St. Margaret Mary Church in Neenah. Jack and Betty's marriage was blessed with one son, one daughter, and 67 wonderful years before Betty preceded Jack in death on April 10, 2016. An interesting note: Jack and Betty were the only married couple (both military) to fly to Washington D.C. in 2010 aboard the Old Glory Honor Flight to see their memorial.
Jack is a retiree of Bergstrom Paper, where he worked in the purchasing department. In retirement, he enjoyed boating and traveling.
Jack was a life member, of over 60 years, of the Neenah-Menasha Elks Club, Disabled American Veterans, Charter member of Valley Military Museum, Fields of Honor 70th Division, Assn., Neenah Historical Society, Neenah Club, and served as a Boys Brigade and Boy Scout Leader.
He will be sadly missed by his children: John (Tammy) Walsh, Lakeville, MN; Julie (Dennis) Olmstead, Appleton; grandchildren: Stephen Walsh, Amanda (Jake) Helmandollar, Seth (Carrie) Waters, Katie (Lewis) Green, Deanna (David) Eversen, Jolie (Nathan) Venton-Walters; a great grandson, Wyatt Helmandollar; a great granddaughter, Roxanne Venton-Walters; and one more on the way; a sister, Jean Walsh Schuchart; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, and his beloved wife Betty, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bill Waters; nephew, Andy Neff; sister, Margaret Walsh; brother, Thomas Walsh.
Funeral Mass for Jack will be held on Monday, July 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary Parish (439 Washington Ave., Neenah) with Father Michael Ingold officiating. Friends will be received directly at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Heaven Mausoleum at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Neenah. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jack's name to: Disabled American Veterans or ThedaCare at Home Hospice.
