Ernest J. Verstegen
Little Chute
Age 85, died peacefully with his family by his side Thursday, December 27, 2001. He was born October 19, 1916 in Little Chute, son of Joseph and Anna [Van Gompel] Verstegen. Ernest married Ann Loretta Peeters June 15, 1940 at St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute where he was a life long member and she preceded him in death April 30, 2001. As a High School Athlete his passion and skill for football earned him a scholarship at Jordan College, and the nickname 'Lightning'. He was a post World War Ii veteran, serving in Japan. Ernest was employed at Kimberly Clark Corp. for 38 years until his retirement. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling and golfing. His handy man skills were demonstrated in 1947, when he built his own home. He belonged to the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258, Little Chute and the Fox Valley Golf Club where he won their President's Cup in 1961.
Ernest is survived by a son, Gary [Lois] Verstegen, Little Chute; three daughters, Janet Verstegen, Little Chute; Ann [Bill] Schaefer, Lone Tree, Colorado; Ellen Verstegen, Kaukauna; four grandchildren, Sara [Jim] Nieling; Jason [Theresa] Verstegen; Vanessa Mills and Brianna Adams; four great grandchildren, Ryan Neiling; Boone Verstegen; Brock Verstegen; and Michelle Mills; a brother, Joseph [Charlotte] Verstegen, four sisters, Bernice Vander Veldon, Ida [James] Peeters, Irene [Don] Peeters, and Joanne Hawley; three brothers in-law, Eugene [Bernice] Peeters, Don [Irene] Peeters, and Mark Peeters; two sisters in-law, Loretta and Marie Verstegen; special friends, Mark Van Ooyen, Tim Verbeten, Jerry Mills; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; five brother, Lester [Peg] Verstegen, Clarence Verstegen, Gerald [Margaret] Verstegen, Robert [Lillian] Verstegen and Carl Verstegen; a sister, Regina [Clarence] Bouressa; a brother in-law, Carl [Irene] Peeters, four sisters in-law, Cele [Earl] Schuler, Monica Peeters, Rita Peeters, and Mary Ellen Peeters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2001 at St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute, with Rev. Msgr. James Vanden Hogen officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Little Chute. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of the mass where military rites by the Jacob Coppus American Post will follow. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
