    • MY GREAT GRAND FATHER
      JOHANNIS HENDRIKUS BERENDSEN
Johannis Berendsen was born in Dedam in the province of
Gelderland, Holland, on September 4, 1804. After completing his
education, he worked as an apprentice in a baker shop. Later he
purchased his own bakery, which was soon enlarged to include general
      merchandising.
In 1826 he married Catherine Hebing and from this union fourteen
children were born. Realizing that his children would have little or no
opportunity of making a success in their country, Mr. Berendsen decided
      to go to America.
Before sailing, several bags of rusk were prepared with other foods,
to be consumed on the voyage. Mr. Berendsen, his wife and eight
children, (Johanna, Johannes, Albert, Hendrina, Bernard, Ludivicus,
Arnold and Henry) sailed from Amsterdam, Holland on February 21,
1856. Two children remained in Holland, Hermina haVing married
Antoon Welling, and Marie who lived with an uncle and aunt.
The sea voyage was rather a pleasant one since they had sufficient
money and provisions for their comfort. They witnessed some hardship,
however, among their fellow passengers. Other families, less fortunate
than they in personal weqIth, were on the ship and in need of food, but
due to the uncertainty of the time it would take to cross the ocean, only little
of their provisions could be spared. Upon landing in New York, what food
they had left was divided among their less fortunate friends.
From New York they proceeded up the Hudson River to Albany,
through the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes to Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Their boat stopped over one night at Mackinac Island located in the
northern part of Lake Huron to unload coal. The night being fairly warm,
the family wrapped themselves in blankets and slept on the wharf. The
next morning each was amused to see the others had very dirty faces,
and poked fun at one another until they discovered that they, too, were
black from the coal dust which had blown on them during the night.
The family landed at Green Bay after being on the way from
Holland about two months. After resting a few days at Green Bay, they continued on to Kaukauna by going up the Fox River. The river was not
navigable beyond this point, because of the rapids, so after resting at the
Grignon Mansion they continued on foot to Little Chute. Here they
visited o!c~friends, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hietpas, whom they had known in
Ho:!and. The Hietpas' were very much surprised and pleased, for when
they (the Hietpas') were leaving Holland for America, they had had
coffee with the Berendsens, and had expressed the thought that they
never expected to meet or have coffee with them again.
Mr. Berendsen purchased 160 acres of land northwest of Freedom
and moved there with his family. Farm life at first proved quite a hardship
since they were not accustomed to this kind of work. In 1863 Mr. and
Mrs. Berendsen retired from the farm and moved to Little Chute. The
farm was taken over by their sons Arnold and Albert, each taking 80
      acres.
