    • John H. Scherer, of Darboy, formerly of Kaukauna, age 84, died Thursday May 24, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Rugby, North Dakota on September 17, 1927 to the late John and Laura (Pfiester) Scherer. The family moved to Combined Locks and John graduated from St. John High School in Little Chute. He then went to the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he graduated from the School of Pharmacy. John married Joan Van Hoof on January 30, 1954 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. Together they raised 9 children including 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. John worked as a pharmacist for 40 years and co-owned and operated Look Drug Stores. He was a kind, quiet and gentle man, but an "in charge" kind of guy. He was a definite collector of many things and a Mr. fix it. He felt his "treasures" all had potential. John had almost 60 combined years with the Kau-Chute/Fox Valleyaires barbershop chorus. He also enjoyed belonging to the Argonne Rec Group and Wimpy's Casino Gang. Following retirement, he became very involved with the Grandpa Patrol at Holy Spirit Parish in Darboy. In his lifetime, he raised goats, rabbits, and bees. He enjoyed gardening, (especially onions), golfing with his buddies at Fox Valley, playing cards, fishing, hunting, bowling, the Packers and parish activities. He especially enjoyed the annual family trek to Peninsula State Park for a week of tent camping. Spending time with family and friends was very important to him and he will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his wife Joan; children: Tom (Jodie), New London; Mark (Pat), Kaukauna; Cathy (Gene) Ott, Menasha; Joe (Deb), Darboy; Pete (Sue), Darboy; Paul (Shelley), Hortonville; Jane (Tom) Vande Yacht, Kaukauna; Judy (Bill) Kobussen, Kaukauna; and Lisa (Dan) Krieck, Darboy; grandchildren: Laura and Amy Scherer; Sean, Kerry, Caitlin and Brendan Scherer; Vicky (Scott) Merzlicker, Sarah (Brian) Crowe, Jenny (Luke) Sternig and Becky Ott; John (fiancee Rachel) and Jena Scherer; Melissa and Travis Scherer; Eric, Megan and Emily Scherer; Jordan Vande Yacht; Tommy and Grace Kobussen; and Morgan and Paige Krieck; great-grandchildren: Brady and Logan Merzlicker and Alayna, Autumn and Ava Crowe; sister: Pat Van Camp; and brother and sisters-in-law: Urban (Anne) Van Hoof and Dawn Van Hoof. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Andy Ott, Michael Scherer and Erin Scherer; son-in-law: Tom Kobussen; sisters: Sr. Mary Scherer O.P. and Barb (Jim) Harp; father and mother-in-law: Martin and Jane (Janssen) Van Hoof; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Jim Van Camp, Ann (Doc) Goshgarian, Blanche ("Tim") Timmers, Gerard (Jean) Van Hoof and Francis Van Hoof.
