    • BOYD/STANLEY — Helen V. Zais, 99, formerly of rural Boyd died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, at Our Lady of Victory Hospital, Stanley.

      She was born Jan. 14, 1917, to the late John and Nellie (Gerrits) Derks. Helen grew up in the area and married Albert Zais Oct. 15, 1935, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Stanley. The couple farmed in the town of Delmar for many years.

      Helen was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church-All Saints Parish, St. Anne’s and Elizabeth’s Societies, the All Saints PCCW and the Marburn Club. She enjoyed making maple syrup and maple sugar, and was known as the “maple syrup queen.” Helen was a hard-working, fun-loving woman.

      She is survived by her four daughters, Delores Long of Stanley, and Carole (Tom Briggs) Peloquin, Pamela (Bruce) Licht and Beverly (Jim) Milas, all of rural Boyd; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

      Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Albert, 2001; her parents; a son, in infancy, Albert Jr.; a son-in-law, Allan Long; and five sisters, Ann Wettstein, Mary Naset, Rozella Mahr, Cecelia Nadeau and Alice Raether.

      A funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boyd, with Fr. William Felix officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Plombon Funeral Home, Stanley.
