Johanna immigrated to the United States in April, 1912 with her parents, Johannes and Maria (Gerrits van den Ende) Jansen and her brothers and sisters. They sailed on the Mount Temple from Antwerpen, Belgium. During their voyage to America, their ship was contacted by the Titanic for help after stricking an iceberg, but the Mount Temple was not close enough to help.
The ship docked at St. John, Canada and from there, the family took a boat to Saulte St. Marie, where they set foot on American soil. Upon arrival, they boarded the Canadian Pacific Railroad and traveled to Onamia, Minnesota, where they resided for two years, but times were very difficult and her father, Johannes came to Kimberly, Wisconsin with his oldest son, Martin, to seek employment at the paper mill. Once gainfully employed, Johannes returned to Minnesota and brought his family of five to Kimberly in 1914. Johanna grew up in Kimberly and attended grade school and St. John's Catholic High School in Little Chute. She married Vincent John Van Gompel on June 5, 1928 at Holy Name Church in Kimberly, Wisconsin.
