My Great-Grandpa on My Dad's Side
George Mara was born Nov. 24, 1889, in Prairie Du Chien, WI. His parents were Frank
Marra and Johanna Bebel. He had three sisters and two brothers. His sisters were Mary, Albina,
and Anna; his brothers were Charles and Frank Jr. George was the second youngest of six kids.
He was raised and educated in Prairie Du Chien. George lived in Prairie his entire life becoming
the caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery there. George married Helen Polodna on Sep. 23, 1913 in
Prairie. George and Helen had one daughter and five sons, one of which was my grandpa
Arnold. George retired due to an illness and spent four years in a hospital in Madison until he
died. He died May 6, 1951.
      A Story about George
On Oct. 15, 1922, just after church, George and his cousin Charles along with a man
named Ed Wachuta were coming to town over Mondell Road. Right when they got into the city,
on a perfectly good and straight road, the car completely flipped and smashed the windshield
and top then skidded around facing the direction they came. The crash left all three men on
the ground sprawled out. The two Mara men were unconscious and when Ed Wachuta realized
a catastrophe had happened he took off running a half mile to the Mitchell's garage, not
realizing that he could have just went to one of the nearby homes and called for help. But he
was so scared that he hopped in his car that was parked on the street and drove out of town.
He wasn't seen for a week after the accident. George and his cousin Charles were so covered in
blood that they could not be identified until the wreck had been towed. Charles died early that
evening and George did not regain consciousness until Monday. Shortly after that, he was
taken to his home and family. George slowly recovered from terrible injuries and infected cuts
caused by the glass and the terrific impact. Ed Wachuta was cut and bruised only slightly during
the accident. It was a sad day of the Sabbath. Both the Maras were rushed to the hospital once
the accident was over. According to lucy Nehrenz the Mara families were at church after mass
and George decided to take a ride with his cousin. The front wheel came off which caused the
accident. Ed Wachuta was overcome by the accident and couldn't bear to be within sight or
hearing of the accident so he returned to his house in a rather roundabout way, but he wasn't
      trying to avoid the affair.
