      Backes, Matthew A. Matthew A. Backes, 71, Appleton, died on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. Matthew was born in New London, Wis., on Oct. 6, 1934, son of the late Matthias and Josephine Backes. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1952. Matthew married Patricia Brochtrup on April 24, 1958. He retired from the Navy in 1973 after serving his country for 20 years. Matthew was a member of Fox Valley Christian Fellowship, Kimberly, where he enjoyed attending bible studies. He enjoyed coin and stamp collecting and playing croquet with his grandchildren. Matthew will be greatly missed by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Pamela (Timothy) Baker, Debra (Peter) Garetson, Sandra (Richard) Schultz and Lisa Lingenfelter; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister, Janet (Bernard) Van Lankvelt. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at FOX VALLEY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP, 1200 West Kimberly Avenue, with Rev. Steve Nickel officiating. Visitors will be received at the church on Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Micah 6:8 "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
