- ROY - The Holy Rosary was said for Agnes Vanderzanden on Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Vanderzanden, a Roy resident, died Wednesday, May 29, 1985, in Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. She was 78.
Agnes Gertrude Vanderzanden was born on Sept. 26, 1906, in Forest Grove, the daughter of William and Wilhemina (Kersten) Smith. She grew up on the family farm between Forest Grove and Banks. She went to Greenville Grade School and Banks High School.
After she finished school, she worked as a housekeeper in Portland until 1930.
She married Victor J. Vanderzanden on June 25, 1930, at Visitation Church in Verboort. They lived in Roy and farmed. Mr. Vanderzanden died in June 1958 from injuries suffered in a tractor accident at the farm. Mrs. Vanderzanden had worked closely with her husband planting and harvesting crops.
She was a life member of St. Francis Altar Society and St. Francis Catholic Church. She also enjoyed sewing and gardening and working with flowers.
Fuiten-Rose Mortuary Chapel of Forest Grove was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Survivors include four sons, John of Escondido, Calif., Allan of Cornelius, and Rudy and David, both of Hillsboro; nine daughters, Mrs. Jean Giesbers of Forest Grove, Mrs. Richard (Anita) Kirby of Florence, Mrs. Ed (Joanne) George of Helena, Mont., Mrs. John (Ellen) Dovey of Richland, Wash., Mrs. Monte (Marilyn) Murphy of Hillsboro, Mrs. Jerry (Rose) Herinckx of Hillsboro, Mrs. Paul (Kathy) Juenemann of Cornelius, Mrs. Thomas (Judy) Webb of Tigard and Mrs. Gary (Laverna) Ascher of Portland; 49 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three brothers, Joseph Smith of Portland, Ervin Smith of Forest Grove and Norman Smith of Banks; four sisters, Esther Petersen of Hillsboro, Mrs. Ernest (Ida) Hermens of Banks, Sister Clotildis, S.S.M.O., of Beaverton, and Marie (Abts) Scally of Beaverton.
The family suggests contributions to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy or to the Vocation of Priesthood and Religious Life, in care of the church, Route 2, Box 63, Banks 97106, in her memory.
