- John P. Coonen, age 54, passed away after a two-year fight with cancer on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at ThedaCare Hospice Residence in Appleton.
John was born on September 11, 1956, at Theda Clark Hospital to David and Nancy (Johnson) Coonen. In 1970, John started working for his father's business, Coonen's Brake and Muffler, and in 1974 he graduated from St. Mary High School in Menasha. In 1994, John took over "the shop" and prided himself on being able to continue the family tradition of providing honest and dependable service to his many customers. John always looked forward to warmer weather when he could spend much of his free time on the golf course. He was also an avid reader of anything historical, technological or biographical. Family and friends were always amazed at his depth of knowledge. That knowledge was put to the test every evening while watching "Jeopardy." It was often a contest between his children to see if any of them could ever answer a question before dad. Most of all, John loved spending time with his grandchildren. Even through his most difficult days, he always had a smile for Kendal and Henry. John also had a great group of lifelong friends. He always looked forward to his yearly "guy's weekend" up north which, rumor has it, was the only time John ever sang karaoke.
John will be dearly missed by his loving children: Jessica (Rob Coenen) Coonen, Megan (David) Thumann, Adam (fiance, Lauren Novak) Coonen; two grandchildren: Kendal Sue Coonen and Henry John Thumann; his parents: David and Nancy Coonen; his brothers and sister: Mike (Becky) Coonen, Paul Coonen, Mary (Jeff) Linehan, Peter (Jackie) Coonen; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street, Menasha, with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. A Memorial Gathering will take place from 10 a.m. until the hour of the Mass at the church. John's request was to continue the celebration of his life following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in John's name to ThedaCare Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
John's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of ThedaCare Hospice Residence, the staff at St. Elizabeth's Radiology and Oncology, and to Dr. Goggins and the staff of Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, for all of the loving care and kindness given to John over the past two years.
