- Joseph VANDERZANDEN 1904-1984
Recitation of the Holy Rosary for Joseph Martin Vanderzanden was Sunday in St. Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Celebration of the Mass of the Resurrection was Monday at St. Matthew Church, burial was in the St. Francis Cemetery in Roy.
Mr. Vanderzanden died June 1, 1984, in Tuality Community Hospital. He was 79.
He was born in Roy on Dec. 12, 1904, the child of John "Jock" and Anna (Bernards) Vanderzanden. On April 9, 1929, he was married at Roy to Elizabeth (Meeuwsen) Vanderzanden.
He lived in Washington County all of his life and in Hillsboro 40 years. He attended School at St. Francis in Roy and worked on the family farm. Later he farmed his own land for several years.
Mr. Vanderzanden also drove a delivery truck for West Union Feed and Hardware for 30 years before retiring in 1971. He was still raising cattle and gardening at the time of his death.
He was the eldest of 10 brothers and sisters.
Mr. Vanderzanden was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Vanderzanden of Hillsboro; two daughters, Vernita Hockersmith and Elsie Vanderzanden, both of Hillsboro, five sons, Marvin of Milwaukie, Howard of Banks, Donald of Eugene, Norbert of Cornelius and Nolan of Aloha five brothers, Walter, Bert and Clarence, all of Hillsboro, Henry of Banks and Raymond of Beaverton; four sisters, Minnie Shaw of Portland, Henrietta Jesse of Banks, Martha Harty of Portland and Agnes Steeves of Pasco, Wash.; and 19 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
