- WALLA WALLA, Wash.-Albert M. "Bert" Van Dyke, 83,
Walla Walla, died July 18, 1989, at a convalescent center.
Mr. Van Dyke was born in Forest Grove and had lived in Verboort.
He was manager of the Ray Maling Cannery in Hillsboro
before moving to Walla Walla in 1946.
A funeral mass was held Friday at St. Patrick Catholic
Church in Walla Walla, with the Rev. Kevin Codd officiating .
Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla.
Mr. Van Dyke was born July 6,1906, in Forest Grove, a son
of Walter and Margaret Joosten Van Dyke. He attended school
in Verboort and graduated from Adcock Mechanics
School in Portland.
He married Marian C. Miller May 28, 1929, in Verboort and
they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this spring.
After being transferred to Walla Walla as manager of the
Birdseye Frozen Food Plant, he also managed a plant for
General Foods in Nampa, Idaho. He retired in 1964
after more than 40 years of duty with Birdseye-General
Foods. After retiring, he acted as a consultant for several
companies, including Cedar Green Food at Wenatchee,
Wash., the University of Alaska (Palmer) Experiment Station
and Heinz Co. in Ciudad, Mexico.
Mr. Van Dyke enjoyed golf, fishing and gardening. He was
a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Walla Walla
Country Club.
He had served on the city planning commission, and was
a member of Walla Walla Area Chamber of Commerce and
Rotary International of Walla Walla.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Van Dyke, Walla Walla; two
daughters, Delores Bennington, Walla Walla, and Joyce King,
Bothell, Wash.; two sons, Burton Van Dyke and Jack Van Dyke,
both of Walla Walla; 14 grandchildren; and eight
great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are six sisters, Minnie Holsmeyer, Forest Grove,
Cecelia Duyck and Loretta Vanderzanden, both of Banks, and
Christine Sahlfeld, Leona Punchochar and Florence Waibel,
all of Hillsboro; five brothers, George Van Dyke,
Raymond Van Dyke, Clarence Van Dyke, Howard
Van Dyke and Ralph Van Dyke, all of Forest Grove; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Bob King,
and two brothers, Ted Van Dyke, 1980, and
Joseph VanDyke, 1988.
Herring Funeral Home of Walla Walla was in charge
of arrangements.
