- Richard W. Hurst, age 80, passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at St. Mary's Hospital in Green Bay with Zelda, his ray of sunshine, at his side. Richard blessed his parents, Herbert and Marion Hurst, with his entrance to this world on January 23, 1931 and continued to enrich their lives in The Hollow on Beaulieu Hill.
A native of Kaukauna and long-time resident of Milwaukee, Richard was employed as a semi-truck driver for several decades until his retirement in 1991. After retirement, Richard moved to Green Bay and lived on the Oneida Indian Reservation until the time of his death.
A deft storyteller with no concept of time while spinning a tale, Richard is survived by his dear friend Zelda and his six children: daughter Vicki (Mark) Ott and his grandchildren Jason (Kim) Ott, Mandy (Mike) Wick, and Molly Ott; daughter Sandy (Jeff) Stumpf and his grandchildren Heath (Jill) Stumpf and Andrea (Reynaldo) Guerrero; son Daniel (Karen) Hurst and his grandchildren Rory (Kate) Hurst, Matthew (Mandi) Hurst, Abby (Nickolas) Davis, Hannah (Daniel) Knudsen, and Jordan Hurst; daughter Cathy (Glen) Hennes and his grandchildren Leah (Kevin) Micke, Theresa Jansen, Sam (Christine) Kilgas, and Charlie (fianc? Margaret) Kilgas; son Mike Hurst and friend Brandon; son Pat (Lisa) Hurst and his grandchildren Alex and Emma. His family tree also blossoms with 19 great-grandchildren.
The lifetime Baltimore Colt and Johnny Unitas fan is further survived by his sister Elaine Hungerford, his brother and sister-in-law Jim and Jane Hurst, and his sister-in-law Pauline Hurst. In addition, he is remembered by Zelda's children Roxanne, Gary, and Dale and her family.
A lover of coconut sticks from Hilltop Bakery and pro football, R.W. spent many Sundays wearing his Colt jersey while watching Packer games, which he never acknowledged as a contradiction because "They're in the other conference." He also enjoyed car rides with Zelda to visit with family members which included stops at the casino, once on the way there and once on the way back. In retirement, Richard referred to his time at the casino as "going to work!" A willing listener, Richard recognized only the good in the people he knew and loved. Laughter came easily and often to Richard and to those who shared in his company.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Gerald "Lanky" Hurst and Marvin Hurst, brother-in-law Marlyn "Mert" Hungerford, special friend Theresa Marquardt, childhood friend Billy Rogers and a slew of original "Beaulieu Hill Bandits," too numerous to mention here. In death as in life, Richard's final farewell would be "So long…"
Shekoli, Chief.
Funeral Services for Richard will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 29, 2011 at Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna. Friend may call at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
