Chilton Times - Stockbridge - May 8, 1920. A respected citizen of Stockbridge passed away when John Gilles left this world Thursday noon, April 29. John Gilles was born in the town of Brothertown, Aug. 9, 1868, being 51 years, 8 months and 20 days old at the time of his death. He grew to manhood on his father's farm and in early manhood he was married to Mary Propson, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Math. Propson of South Stockbridge. They started housekeeping on a nearby farm where they lived three years, then Mr. Gilles health failing, they left the farm and moved into Chilton city. After he grew better he again purchased a farm, which was located east of Quinney. Three years ago they purchased the Anton Petrie farm on the Old Road where he passed away. Mr. Gilles was an honest, upright man, a good neighbor and a kind husband and father. He was a very energetic man but has been greatly handicapped by ill health. Last fall he suffered a severe attack of pneumonia which left him in such a weakened condition he has been confined to bed most of the time for the past several months. He leaves besides his wife, five children, Gregory, Norbert, Hilda, Irma, and Arthur, also three sisters, Mrs. Peter Ecker of Stockbridge, Mrs. Ed. Steinmetz, Fond du Lac, and Mrs. George Baus of St. Cloud. One brother Matt. preceded him in death a year ago. The funeral was held Saturday from St. Mary's church, Stockbridge.
