      John Ludwig

      A VETERAN DIES
The Times learns of the death of John Ludwig, which occurred at Kaukauna, on Sunday last after an illness of some months from dropsy. Mr. Ludwig was a native of Germany and was born in 1840. At the age of 13 he came to this country with his parents, who formed a portion of the first colony of Germans to locate in the town of Stockbridge.

When the flag of his adopted country was fired upon he enlisted to defend it and went to the front with Co. D. of the 1st Wis. Cavalry, one of the best fighting regiments of the state. After the close of hostilities he returned to his home to till the soil. He followed farming until some six years ago when he moved to Kaukauna and engaged in the butcher business. He was never a healthy man after coming out of the service. He was popular with his comrades, respected by his neighbors and friends.

The funeral took place on Wednesday at Kaukauna and was a large one. His brothers, Albert and Frank, of Stockbridge, his sister Mrs. Fred Meyer and husband, Jos. Hanke and daughter, Annie of Charlestown were in attendance.
