- Ellen Marie Sturtz, 90, of Chilton, died on August 28, 2018, at Libbys House Assisted Living in Chilton. She was born August 11, 1928, in the Town of Spring Valley, WI, daughter of Gregor and Catherine (Schwartz) Leonhard. On May 24, 1949, she married George Juckem and together they had seven children. Following Georges death in 1984, Ellen married Harry Sturtz on March 8, 1986.
Ellen grew up in Kohler and worked on the family farm, later farming for many years with her first husband, George. Later in life she spent over 25 years as a waitress at the Hickory Hills Golf Course. Her greatest work, however, was running her household as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was very important to Ellen and she enjoyed making homemade meals for family and friends. She passed on many of her recipes to her children which they cherish, such as German Potato Salad, Dill Pickles, and Pistachio Torte, just to name a few. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Chilton and her faith was always near to her heart.
Ellen was active in the community and spent time helping and participating in many organizations. She was active in the Calumet Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary for many years and was awarded awards for her service. She was chairperson for the Hospital Holiday Fair, served many offices for the Chilton Eagles Club, and was a member of the Calumet Homemakers and Daughters of Isabella.
Ellen loved golfing with Harry at different courses and belonged to several golf leagues. She played at Hickory Hills in the Tuesday Womens League and she joined Harry in the Monday Couples League, and she also played league at Crystal Lake. Besides playing, she held various offices for those clubs. When she wasnt golfing Ellen was always up for a game of Sheepshead with her family and friends.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Harry; her children: Paul (JoAnne) Juckem, Michael Juckem, Ruth (Dale) Maradei, MarJean (Daniel) Hedrich, Mark Juckem, Gary (Polly) Juckem, Larry Sturtz, and Lisa (John) Schwarz; eleven grandchildren: Patrick (Elissa), Christopher (Carrie), Daniel (Caley), Jacob (Crystal), Samantha (Brock), Stephanie, Charley (Stephanie), Patrick, Sasha, Hunter, and Sierra; 13 great-grandchildren: Emmett, Gavin, Macy, Lilly, Micah, Lily, Aiden, Zoey, Rilen, Briar, Gretchen, Natalie, and Jack; her in-laws: Art Kozminski, Leonard (Carol) Juckem, Julie Juckem, Ray Ries, Betty (George) Jost, Liz Juckem, Karen Juckem, Rita (Stan) Timmer, Len Sturtz, Shirley Price, Judy (Jay) Wolf, Marlene (Sky) Frost, Jerry (Jane) Sturtz, Darrel (Jackie) Sturtz, and Gary Sturtz; and many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Ellen was preceded in death by her first husband, George Juckem; her daughter: Katherine Juckem; her parents: Gregor and Catherine Leonhard; her siblings: Raymond (Loretta) Leonhard, Hilaria (William) Dreps, Mathilda (Fred) Fesing, Hugo (Mary Ann) Leonhard, Herbert (Lauretta) Leonhard, Viola (Willard) Braun, Arno (Jeanette) Leonhard, Evelyn (Harry) Kolberg, Catherine (Herbert) Sukowaty, Magdaline (Clarence) Belitz, Florence (Walter) Kress, Lawrence (Emily) Leonhard, Anthony (Mary) Leonhard, Deloris Leonhard, and Clarissa (Pete) Tadych; and her in-laws: Tillie Kozminski, Herman Juckem, Virginia Ries, Sister Mary Carol, Charles Juckem, John (Erna) Juckem, Elsie Juckem, Mary (Tony) Leonard, Tony Juckem, Janice Sturtz, and Mel Price.
Funeral services are set for 10:00am on Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the St. Marys Catholic Church (108 S. 6th St.) in Hilbert. Friends may call from 4:00pm until 7:00pm at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton on Friday, August 31, 2018, and from 9:00am until 10:00am at St. Marys Catholic Church in Hilbert on the day of the service. A committal service will take place at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Chilton immediately following the service.
Ellens family would like to say thank you to her husband, Harry, who showed her so much love and compassion to mom over the last several years during her illness. They want to thank Libbys House and Heartland Hospice for their compassion and support. They extend a special thank you to Beverly Fesing and Rebecca Tiffany for all the support and love you gave her and her family while she was at Libbys House.
A memorial fund has been established in Ellens name.
