Bastian, Herbert W.
Herbert W. Bastian, 98, Brillion, passed away on Monday, February 1, 2010, at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton. Herbert was born September 11, 1911, in the Town of Brillion to the late Henry L. Bastian and Elizabeth (Zick) Bastian. On October 12, 1944, Herbert married Beatrice Frederick in Oconto Falls. She preceded him in death on July 21, 2009. Herbert lived and farmed in the Town of Brillion until 1976 when he and his family built a new home on part of their farm property.
Herbert was a faithful member of the Rural Brillion United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent and teacher, President of the Methodist Brotherhood and President of the Official Board of the Church, as well as participating in many Bible studies over the years. He was also a member of the Men's Quartet and the Brillion Brillionaires Barbershoppers. Herbert was also a Director of Forest Assembly and a Past President of the Brillion Historical Society. He was also a member, serving as secretary of the Brillion Co-op Board and a member of the Alcott and Forest Junction School Boards.
Herbert was a skilled woodworker, creating many custom pieces of furniture for his and Beatrice's home and for family and friends. Many people are proud owners of Herbert's trademark bench. He also loved to care for his garden, and was especially proud of his potato crop each year. In addition, Herbert was a great game player, especially Uno and Rummikub.
Herbert is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: James and Delores, Forest Junction; Joel and Kris, Sheboygan; John and Nina, Manitowoc; three grandchildren and their spouses and children: Daniel and Sara Bastian and their daughter Lilianna, Madison; Brian and Lynn Bastian and their daughter Eva, Green Bay; Brandon and Ruth Cook and their daughter Hannah, Neenah; one foster granddaughter, Michelle Heck, Sheboygan and her son B.J. Jones; other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Herbert was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph and Nelson; three sisters: Norma Bastian, Ora Bastian and Eulalia Wolfmeyer; and brother-in-law, Earl Frederick.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Wieting Funeral Home in Brillion with Pastor Becky Kindschi officiating. Burial will be in the Brillion Community Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Chilton Care Center and Calumet Medical Center for their kindness and care for Herbert the past several months.
