Van Handel, Chevra J.
Chevra Van Handel, 65, Little Chute, died Saturday, June 27, 2009, following a lengthy illness at Brewster Village, Appleton. She was born September 27, 1943, in Duluth, Minnesota, daughter of Glenn and Lois (Mullinex) Cowie. Chevra owned and operated the Costume Shoppe, Appleton, from 1976 until her death. She was a great seamstress and replicated costumes for museum pieces and sports team mascots. Chevra entertained with the USO for 2 tours during the Vietnam War. She enjoyed going to the casino with Fritz.
Chevra is survived by her partner of 39 years, Fritz Van Handel; four children, Rhonda Schmitt (David), Montgomery, MN; Stuart (Julie) Schmitt, Sherwood; Chevra (Kelly) Ziegler, Alborn, MN; Brenda (Kevin) Tremel, Kimberly; eleven grandchildren; a sister, Arlone (Bud) Johnson, Phoenix, AZ; brother-in-law, Joe (Mary) Van Handel, Neenah; two sisters-in-law, Jean (Larry) Welnetz, Town, Harrison; Joan Malloy, Appleton; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Richard, Robert, Harvey, Hickel Ware.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 325 S. Pine St., Little Chute, with Fr. James Hablewitz officiating. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Little Chute. Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.Chevra's family wishes to thank Brewster Village and staff for their wonderful care and compassion.
