Kersten, Irene (Wilz)
Irene (Wilz) Kersten, 95, a longtime Green Bay resident was called Home to our Lord on Tuesday, June 16, 2009. She was born Sept. 21, 1913, to Peter and Anna (Alft) Wilz in the Town of Harrison, Calumet County. Following her graduation from high school and business college and on the advice of her teacher, Bertha Berry, Irene took a civil service exam. Under President Roosevelt's initiative, employment offices were opened throughout the country. Irene became the first full-time employee of the Appleton Employment office.
On May 24, 1941, she married John J. Kersten in Appleton. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1995. Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish and a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Letter writing was her favorite pastime, which she continued until her death.
Irene is survived by a son, John "Jack" (Dianna Matzke) Kersten; a daughter, Kayleen (Roger) Menting; seven grandchildren, John (Geralyn) Kersten, Steve (Kim) Kersten, Mitch (Carri) Kersten, Kim (Chris) Holzschuh, Joe Menting, Michelle (Dan) Schmidt, Melinda (Chris) Lemke; 13 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Josephine Roder; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Cecilia and Ben Dugas, Regina and Louis Captain; a brother, Clarence Wilz; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Norbert and Florence Kersten, Irvin and Coletta Kersten, Peter Kersten, George Roder.
Friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of Ninth St. and 12th Ave., Green Bay, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Donald Everts officiating. Luncheon will follow. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. A memorial fund has been established in Irene's name.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Wayside Parkview Estates who lovingly cared for her during her stay. Thank you also to everyone who helped make Irene's long life happy and comfortable.
