- Bernard A. "Barney" Vogels, 96, of De Pere passed away on Tuesday June 5, 2012 at Unity Hospice with his family at his side. He was born February 22, 1916 in Rudolph, WI. to the late George and Anna Vogels. On February 19, 1941 he married Dorothy Smith. They enjoyed nearly 66 years of marriage together before her death in 2007. Bernard had many talents among them was his love for music. One of his greatest joys was playing his mandolin. He was a beautiful musician, having never taken a music lesson. He had a ear for music, and enjoyed this passion with his wife Dorothy. For many years they played music together in their own polka band. Bernard was a wonderful father to his 11 children. He loved children and truly enjoyed his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bernard loved to feed his squirrels, and they came in bunches to eat the peanuts he had for them. Dad enjoyed his weekly visits to the D&G Restaurant, where he loved to visit and tease the wait staff. He is survived by his children, Donna (Robert) Leiterman, Mary (Norbert) Hansen, James (Gail) Vogels, Dennis (Sandy) Vogels, Gerald (Cathy) Vogels, Carol (Steve) Kepler, Judy (Jim) Van Remortel, Thomas (Ann) Vogels, Joanne (Dan) Van Camp, and Brenda (Glenn) Borths. He is further survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy, his daughter and son in law, Patricia (Archie) Hepola, a daughter in law Li Lene Vogels, as well as his two sisters, Nell, and Mary, and three brothers, Willard, George, and Peter. Friends may call at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME 305 N. Tenth Street in De Pere from 4 - 8pm Thursday (TODAY). Visitation will continue after 9am Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church 220 S. Michigan Street. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am with Fr. Richard Getchel officiating. Per Bernard's wishes there will be no open casket on Friday morning.
