    • Stephen J. Joyce was born in 1815 in County Galway, Ireland where he was reared and educated. The Joyce family owned and operated a marble company in Ireland. Stephen was allergic to marble dust so he was not able to join the family business. He left Ireland in 1847 at the age of 32 and came to Rockland, Brown County, Wisconsin in 1851 from County Galway, Ireland via Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Boston, Massachusetts where in 1851 he was married to Elizabeth Duffy. Stephen was advised by a Boston doctor to go to Wisconsin where the tall pines are so that he could get relief from asthma. At the time, the U.S. Federal Government gave the State of Wisconsin Section 16 of each township in the state. These sections were to be sold and the monies used to start the University of Wisconsin. On January 27, 1855, Stephen Joyce bought 40 acres in Section 16 in the Town of Rockland, Wisconsin. On April 1, 1856, he bought an additional 40 acres. The deeds for this land purchased are in the Historical Museum in DePere, Wisconsin. Stephen had to cut down trees and build a cabin. Woodsmen passing through at the time took time to make doors for the cabin because of animals in the woods. Stephen had temporarily hung blankets over the doors to keep out the cold. Stephen and Elizabeth had 7 sons and 4 daughters. Two of the sons graduated from the University of Wisconsin. Stephen and Elizabeth Joyce`s graves are in the old section of Allouez Cemetery. Records show that the graves were moved there as the old cemetery was near the east end of the Mason Street bridge. (Story and research provided by Marcella Joyce Anderson for the James Joyce family.)
