  • Notes
    • James V. Guilfoyle age 81, of Port Edwards, died Monday, December 17, 2012 surrounded by his family at the Wisconsin Rapids Care Center, after several bouts of cancer.

He was born May 4, 1931 in Kaukauna to Wesley and Louise (Merckx) Guilfoyle. After attending Holy Cross Grade School and high school in Kaukauna, he graduated from Lawrence University in Appleton and received his master's degree in business from U.W. Oshkosh. Jim was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland between 1953-1954, while serving in the US Army.

Jim married Helen Verbockel on October 9, 1954 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hollandtown. He spent his adult life working in administration for the paper industry in Appleton, Cloquet, MN, and Port Edwards.

Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son Mike. He loved gardening and spent many hours in his garden. Jim was an avid reader, especially enjoyed American history. In earlier years, he was involved in the Boy Scouts, the Port Edwards Village Board and trap shooting. He and Helen traveled to many countries after his retirement. They also played bridge and sheepshead with friends. His friends remember him always telling jokes and even keeping a list of punch lines in his wallet. He certainly adored his family, especially his granddaughters.

Surviving are his wife, Helen; son, Michael of Wisconsin Rapids; daughter, Susan (Barry) Gruetzmacher of Wisconsin Rapids; 2 granddaughters, Katy Gruetzmacher of Oconomowoc and Kelly Gruetzmacher of Minneapolis, MN; his mother-in-law, Alvina Verbockel of Kimberly; 1 brother, Thomas (Alice) Guilfoyle of Appleton; 1 sister, Judy Killian of Fort Mill, SC; 1 brother-in-law, Ralph Verbockel of Stockbridge; and 3 sisters in-law, Florence (Jim) Hietpas of Kaukauna, Jean Verbockel of Kaukauna, and Marilyn Verbockel of Shiocton. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Billy; father-in-law, Henry Verbockel; two brothers in-law, Henry Verbockel, Jr. and Alvin Verbockel; and a sister in-law, Betty Verbockel.

Jim's wishes were for a private service with family. Burial will be at a later date in the Village of Port Edwards Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to U.W. Cancer Center. Online condolences may be expressed at www.ritchayfuneralhome.com. Feldner/Ritchay Funeral Home of Nekoosa is assisting the family.

The Guilfoyle family would like to thank the staff at the Wisconsin Rapids Care Center and Ministry Home Care Hospice for their love and wonderful care.
