Acker, Althea Rose Nee (Gaffney)
Althea, age 77, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2009. She was born on March 31, 1932, to James and Marjorie (Burbey) Gaffney. On June 22, 1960, she married Harold Acker. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1999. Althea was a member of St. Johns Catholic Parish in Menasha, WI. She attended Holy Name Catholic Grade School and graduated from Kimberly High School. She was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 60 in Kimberly. She was very athletic and she was one of the Fox Valleys Classic League bowlers. She loved playing cards, Bingo, and watching the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and the Wisconsin Badgers! She was employed for 14 years by her brother, Nick, who owned the Gaffney Dry Cleaners.
Survivors include one son, David Acker, dear friend, Eileen Newcomb, Menasha, two daughters and sons-in-law: Ann Peterson (Roger), Palm Desert, California and Patricia (Tom) Asmuth, Appleton. She had seven grandchildren: Jim, Jaime, Bailey Huss (Jason and son, Austin) and Kelsey Acker (daughter, Neveah), Matt Entorf and Emily and Dan Asmuth. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law: Helen Gaffney, Lavila Gaffney, Gertie Gaffney and Bernie Gaffney, all of Kimberly; three brothers-in-law: George Acker, Kimberly, Ralph Acker (Carol), Appleton and Larry (Sandy) Walbrun, Menasha.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, and six brothers: James, John Dob, Cletus Fish, Nick Cecil, Lawrence Dell, Leland Phatt Gaffney, three sisters: Marjorie Corey, Kathleen Walbrun and Marcella Smith and one brother-in-law, Harold Corey. She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at St. John Catholic Church, 516 |De Pere Street, Menasha, with Fr. Larry Canavera officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Interment will take place in Kelso-Union Cemetery, Kaukauna. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at The Gardens of Fountain Way Assisted Living and to her special friends and caregivers from Heartland Hospice. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Jack Anderson, Dr. John Grandone and Dr. Paul McAvoy for their compassionate care over the years.
