Sylvester T. Dercks 'Ves' 2717 W. Capitol Dr. Appleton
Age 66, passed away at 7:20 a.m. Friday, March 9, 1990, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 20, 1923, in the Town of Vandenbroek, the son of the late Peter and Ann [Weyenberg] Dercks. He was employed by Midtec Papers until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and the American Legion Post No. 436, Wrightstown. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific.
Survivors include his wife, Rita [Wilz] Dercks; a daughter and son in-law, Diane and Thomas Spoehr, Appleton; two sons and daughters in-law, Neal and Donna Dercks, Little Chute; Gene and Carla Dercks, Appleton; two brothers and sisters in-law, Clarence and Betty Dercks, Little Chute; Mark and Bernice Dercks, Little Chute; two sisters and brothers in-law, Marie and Harold Vandenberg, Little Chute; Betty and James Peerenboom, Little Chute; five grandchildren; Diana, Shaun, Scott and Ann Dercks; Jennifer Spoehr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George. The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 1990 from St. Pius X Catholic Church with Father Ronald Colombo officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church from 5 p.m. Saturday until the time of service. Military rites will immediatley follow the funeral Mass. A memorial fund has been established. The Valley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

For exemplary conduct in combat, Private First Class Sylvester T. Derks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter M. Derks, 723 Depot Street, Little Chute, has been presented the army's newest award for infantrymen, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Awarded for exemplary conduct in combat or for combat action in a major operation, the new medal is a silver rifle on a blue field with a silver border, imposed on an elliptical silver wreath. Since starting his tour of overseas service July 7, 1943, Private Derks has been stationed on New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Vella Lavella. He is a member of the infantry regiment which repelled the Japanese attack on Hill 700 in four days of intense fighting which saw the annihilation of more than 1,700 of Japan's 6th Imperial division.
