- Betty J. Slater
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 23 at the Poole Funeral Home, Port
Washington for Betty J. Slater, of Port Washington, who died Saturday, April 20,
2002 at St. Marys Hospital-Ozaukee, at the age of 77. Reverend Joseph Haas of St.
Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church, Port Washington, officiated at the ceremony.
Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Fredonia. Poole Funeral
Home, Port Washington, assisted the family with arrangements.
She was born on Dec. 2, 1924 in Hollandtown, Wash., daughter of the late Ted and
Nell (Van Vreede) Gerrits. In May, 1948 she married Allan E. Slater of Random
Lake in Dubuque, Iowa.They raised their family in Fredonia before moving to Port
Washington in 1964.
Mrs. Slater was a secretary for the former Peiffer Advertising of Port Washington for
many years. While living in Fredonia she started their first Girl Scout troop and
remained a leader when she moved to Port Washington. She volunteered in city
voting polls and with the former Port Washington Mariners Drill Team.
She is survived by her husband, Allan; daughters Shari (Mike) Lohuis of Medina,
Ohio, Pam (Bob) Thill of Cedarburg, Alison (Bob) Benter of New Fane; son Ted
(Theresa Schwartz) Slater of Cudahy; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson;
sisters Evelyn Keller of Appleton; Ethel Dupler, Hilda (Clarence) Veit, Bernice
Leonhard, all of Sheboyan; brother Don (Edith) Gerrits of Fond du Lac; other
relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by an infant daughter Marciana and granddaughter
Heather.
