- George Freiburger. In after years, a history of New London would be incomplete were prominent mention not made of the gentleman whose name is here recorded, and who is one of the most progressive and prosperous of her manufacturers.
He is a native to this state, born in Erin Township, Washington County, January 26, 1851, a son of john and catherine (Freiburger) Freiburger, of the province of Alsace ( Now in Germany ), whence, in 1846 they came to America, settling in Washington County, Wi, where the father carried on farming operations up to the time of his death, in 1876. The widowed mother is now residing with our subject, enjoying well earned repose in her declining years. They were the parents of eleven children, five of whom are yet living. : John, in New London; Catherine wife of Herman Komp, of Liberty Township, Outagamie Co., Wis.: George, August, and Leonard, of Antigo, Langlade Co., Wis of these, George was educated in the distric schools of his native township, after which he worked on his fathers farm until he was nineteen years of age, and then in the lumber woods about two and one half years. When twenty-one years old, in 1872, he came to New London, where, in his brother John's shop, he learned the trade of blacksmith, at which he subsequently worked for four years, and then formed a partnership with his brother, which continued until 1880, when it was dissolved, our subject carrying on the buisness for his own account. He is now proprietor of one of the largest and best equipped wagon-making and blacksmithing establishments in the county, fammed far and wide for the excellent work turned out.
Mr. Freiburger was married april 5, 1875, to Miss Anna Mary Schaller, who was born in Rubicon, Dodge Co., Wis., daughter of Micheal and Anna Mary ( Boltes) Schaller, who came to New London in 1837, and are here yet residing. To the union were born six children, two whom died in infancy, the names of those yet living being John Leonard, Vincent Micheal, Rosalia Mary, and Hadrian George. The entire family are prominently identified with the Roman Catholic Church, socially Mr. Freiburger is a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, the society of St. Joseph, and other organizations. In his political preferance he is a democrat, and has served the city of his adoption in various offices of trust, such as: Alderman, one year: assessor, two years: foreman of the fire department, six years.
