Girl drowns after falling from raft
100 Years Ago-September 10, 1881
The Appleton Post Crescent
September 10, 1981
On Friday afternoon last, while the 14 year-old daughter of Anton Smith of Little Chute, was on the old raft just at west of the bridge, near the Richmond Paper Mills, she fell in and was drowned, although some boys seeing her gave instant alarm.
Theodore West, in whose family she was a visitor, came at once, but not being able to swim, feared to go into the water.
Her remains were soon brought to the surface by Mr. Noble, and Dr. Reeve exerted himself to resuscitate life, but it was in vain.
