- Kimberly Man Survives Fire Aboard Boxer
A Kimberly marine was blown overboard by exploding ammunition during the fire which swept the USS navy carrier, Boxer, in Korean waters in July, killing nine.
Private First Class William Philipsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Philipsen, Sr., 403 E First street, Kimberly, informed his parents he didn't know how long he was in the water before being rescued by a helicopter and taken to the carrier, Essex, which was on its way to relieve the Boxer before the disaster.
He passed out after being rescued, but while in the water, fruitlessly swam after a floating steel tank, only to have waves beat him back after nearly reaching it several times.
Philipsen is now in Japan where the Boxer is in dry dock. He enlisted in the Marine corps in February 1951.
