      Danke, Leon N.

Leon N. Danke, age 75, of Fremont, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at his home. He was born on September 8, 1934, in Readfield, Wisconsin, the son of the late Leonard and Ethel (Dorow) Danke. Leon served his country in the US Army. On February 13, 1960, Leon married Norene VanderZanden at Holy Spirit Church in Kimberly. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this year. Leon was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Weyauwega. He did his apprentice work at Valley Sheet Metal in Dale, and then worked at Azco-Hennes before retiring in 1996. Leon was a member of Union Local 18 Sheet Metal Workers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at his cottage up north hunting with his son, Dennis and brother, Alton, watching wildlife, feeding the birds, gardening, watching and talking about football, baseball and basketball and riding with his grandson, Logan "Leon" in his convertible (golf cart). Leon will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend and neighbor. After retiring, Leon and Norene moved up north, but later moved back to the area to be closer to their family. He will be dearly missed by everyone.

Leon is survived by his wife, Norene; a son, Dennis (Kathy), New London; two daughters: Dawn (Tim) Lemke, Fremont and Debra (Rollie) Hermes, Weyauwega; seven grandchildren: Kerri (Shawn), Jessica (Nate), Ryan (Jesse), Heather (Brian), Melissa (Shane), Logan "Leon" and Sheridan; three great-grandchildren: Isabella, Nolan and Lydia; three brothers: Alton (Barb), New London; Nathan, New London; and Arden, Weyauwega; four sisters: Myra Magolski, New London; Elvera (Dave) Kent, New London, Donna (Dave) Pagel, Neenah; and Sylvia Ruppel, Appleton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leon was preceded in death by two brothers: Ivan and Owen, an infant brother and sister; his father-in-law, George VanderZanden; two nieces: Rhonda Danke and Dorothy Magolski; three nephews: Greg, Corey and Timothy Danke.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, January 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Weyauwega. Father Bert Samsa, OFM, Cap. will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Readfield. Friends may call on Sunday, at the Lewin Funeral Home, Fremont from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A prayer vigil will be held on Sunday at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. A memorial fund has been established.

Leon's family would like to extend a very special Thank you to Cardiologist, Dr. Wilson and his assistant, Ann, in Appleton, Dr. Strobusch in Waupaca, ThedaCare nurses, MaryAnn and Lisa, and the EMS Responders and Mike Boettcher, for their care and compassion.

Leon had a great sense of humor and enjoyed making everyone laugh. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
