    • Sister Mary DeGroot - Sister Mary Elizabeth De Groot, O.P., 92, passed away Monday, Jan. 29 at Kenosha Care Center, Kenosha. Born July 26, 1914, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Justine (DeBot) DeGroot. On Aug. 30, 1931 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1932 was given the religious name Sister Maurice. She professed her vows in 1934 and her final vows in 1940. In 1968 she returned to using her baptismal name Mary. She spent many years in service to others in teaching and care of the elderly. She began her teaching ministry in 1931 at Sacred Heart, Racine. Other places in Wisconsin where she taught were Holy Name, St. Mary, St. Rita, St. Rose and St. Joseph, Racine; Lakeside Public School, Belgium; SS. Peter and Paul, Green Bay; St. John, Little Chute; Holy Cross, Kaukauna; Holy Name, Kimberly and St. Augustine, Wausaukee. She also taught in Michigan and Illinois. She cared for the elderly in Milwaukee, Racine, New Mexico and California. In 1984 she moved to Siena Center. In September 2005 she became a resident of Lincoln Village, Racine and in October of that year she moved to Kenosha Care Center. She is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; a brother, Rendall; two sisters-in-law, Helen Keller and Sylvia DeGroot and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by eight brothers, Edwin, Raymond, Gerald, Harold, Cyril, Richard, Robert and John and two sisters, Eunice Champeau and Rita Bentley. Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 9:30 a.m. until time of the Liturgy with a Remembering Service at 11 a.m. in the Siena Center Chapel, Racine on Thursday, Feb. 1, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 1 p.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery on Highway 32. Maresh-Meredith & Acklam Funeral Home, Racine is serving the family. (Peshtigo Times 1/31/2007)
