    • Karl M. Backes went to be with his Lord on Monday, June 23, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. After a lengthy illness, he passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family.

      Karl was born on October 27, 1925 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to Matthias and Josephine Backes, who have long since gone to our Lord. He was raised on a farm outside Appleton with his three brothers and three sisters.

      Karl attended Lawrence University then joined the Navy, eventually receiving his officers commission from Notre Dame University. He began working at Monolith Portland Cement Plant near Tehachapi at age 27, where he remained until his retirement 47 years later. Karl was much loved and admired by all who worked with him.

      Karl was a long time member of the Tehachapi Planning Commission and was one of the founding Board Members of the Tehachapi Cummings Valley Water District. He is also a charter member of the Tehachapi Lions Club. He founded the Little League and Babe Ruth baseball programs in his community and was a devoted member of St. Malachys Catholic Church.

      Family members include his loving wife, Daphne; daughter, Michele Turner and husband Rod; daughter, Lynn Arvizu and husband Tony; daughter, Angeline Lacy and husband Robbin; son, Michael Backes and wife Kim; daughter, Marianne Loyd and husband Tommy; son, David Backes and wife Trina. His life is also celebrated by his 17 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Karl was also particularly close to his devoted mother-in-law, Angelita Ott. Karl also leaves one sister, two brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.

      The family would like to thank Hoffmann Hospice for the outstanding care both Karl and the family received during his final days.
