Age 82, died Saturday February 21, 2009 at Manor Care in Appleton after a short illness. Fran was born November 15, 1926 in Appleton to the late Englebert and Rose (Weyenberg) Liethen. He was a graduate of Kaukauna High School where he starred in football during the 1940s. After turning down football scholarships to major universities, he decided to serve his country in France and Japan with the Merchant Marines and the Fifth Air Force where he continued to play football. On June 8, 1950, Fran was united in marriage to Mary Johnson. The couple enjoyed 50 years together until her death in 2000. Fran sold cars at Gibson Chevrolet and Neenah Menasha Ford. He then went on to work as an insurance salesman for Prudential and Home Mutual Insurance Company. He received many awards for his outstanding salesmanship during his career. Fran was a huge Packer fan, holding season tickets for over 60 years dating back to the old City Stadium. He liked to travel with his wife Mary. He also loved to play the slot machines at Oneida Casino, and he enjoyed his trips duck hunting. Fran is survived by his daughter Debra (David) Patterson, Wauwatosa; 2 sons: Thomas (Kitty) Liethen, Boise, ID, and Jeffry (Trisha) Liethen, Oshkosh; his sister Irene Sis Remick, Neenah. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews. Fran was preceded in death by his wife, his infant son, Billy, parents, 3 sisters: Eileen, Mary Lois Mitzi, and Rosemary Snooks. 4 brothers: Clarence, Kenneth, Robert, and Don Toup. A Memorial Service will be held 11 am on Friday, February 27th at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 S. State St. Appleton, with Father Michael ORourke officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 10 am until the time of service. Inurnment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. Mary Catholic Church.
