    • Virginia L. Calkins (nee Smits), a 40 + year resident of Skokie, as well as Fox Lake and Round Lake Beach, passed away peacefully in Kenosha, WI on January 25, 2013. She was born on March 24, 1926, to Irvin and Agnes (nee Voet) Smits.

      She enjoyed reading. She read four newspapers each day and was a published writer of children's stories in children magazines. She played the piano at church and various nursing homes. She also loved cats.

      Virginia will be deeply missed by her children, Marcia (Gene) Burchi of Round Lake, Gloria Kanneberg of Lake Villa, Donna (Craig) Lowe of McHenry and Pamela (James) Garrity of McHenry; her brother, Jerome "Hilary"(Doris) Smits of York, PA; her son-in-law, Terry Heydecker of Schaumburg; her grand-children, Ted (Rebecca Kaup) Burchi of Racine, WI, Benjamin (Kara) Heydecker of Algonquin, and Peter Heydecker of Schaumburg, Antone Smits of York, PA; her great-grandchildren, Riley and Kiara.

      She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eugene, her daughters, Anita Heydecker and Cynthia who was Pam's twin.

      Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. until the 12 noon memorial service at K. K. Hamsher Funeral Home 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake. Interment will be private.
