  • Notes
    • My great grandma Mary and grandpa Andrew Machurick immigrated to the United States from Czechoslovakia. Great grandpa had been working for Mary's parent. That's how they met and later wed. We were told that they came through Ellis Island, but we are unable to find their names anywhere. They first settled in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania with a number of other immigrants. He worked as a laborer for the railroad. Even though he could not speak any English, he ran a crew for the railroad. They didn't have any money, when they arrived in Pittsburgh, so they set up home in a box car. Great grandma used to tell stories how she like living in the box car! They then moved from Pittsburgh to Abrams WI with her father, my Great, great Grandpa Mike Kurtz who bought a small farm. Great grandpa Andrew moved the mail from the railroad drop off to town. Great grandpa Andrew and Mary built a small hotel/restaurant bar where the men from the railroad could sleep and enjoy a home cooked meal. They raised 4 children above the bar/restaurant.
