- Ron passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Cherry Meadows Hospice following a strong battle with pancreas cancer for 23 months. Ron was born and raised in Appleton, Wis., on Sept. 6, 1947, to Walter W. Maass and Lily (Truax) Maass-Cummings. He attended catholic schools and was a proud graduate of Xavier High School Class of 1966. After graduation, Ron served our country for three years in the US Army. He then followed in his father's footsteps and became employed at Miller Electric. Ron gave 37 years of dedicated service to the company in various positions, before taking an early retirement. Throughout his years, Ron participated in bowling, pool, and golf leagues. He was an avid sports card collector. Ron was truly a great person and always thought about others before himself.
Survivors include a son, Kyle (Kristy) Maass; a daughter, Anna Rose Maass; his wife and friend for the last 19 years, Char Van Deraa; his mother, Lily (Truax) Maass-Cummings and her husband, James Cummings; a brother, Charles (Barbara) Maass; sisters, Mary (Kenneth) Shampo, Christine (Nicholas) Gunderson, Rosann (Pete Younger) Maass; a mother-in-law, Leona Van Deraa; brother-in-law, Dave Van Deraa; former wife, Sharon Maass. He is further survived by nieces and nephews, Kim, Kenneth, Jr., Jesse, Justin, Jamie, Dylan, Ethan, Meta, Maya, along with other relatives and special cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter W. Maass and his father-in-law, James Van Deraa.
A service for Ron will be held on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton with the Rev. Frank Conner officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Military honors will be conducted after the service at the funeral home on Thursday. A memorial fund is being established in his name.
Ron's family would like to extend a thank you to the entire staff at FVHO, ThedaCare at Home Hospice (Leslie, Tricia, Sara and Julie) and the Target Pharmacy Staff.
