- VAN ASTEN Kenneth I. Van Asten passed from this world and into the next on February 9, 2012 after a brave struggle with cancer at the age of 68. Ken was a determined man who came to call Jacksonville, Florida his home after being born in Kaukauna, Wisconsin to John and Martha Van Asten. Although a man of numerous accomplishments, Ken was known to many as simply 'a good man'. Ken served in the United States Navy for four years and was honorably discharged. It was the Navy that brought Ken to Jacksonville and shortly after his discharge, Ken became a firefighter with the Jacksonville Fire Department and rose to become a District Chief from which he retired February 20, 2004. In addition to the fire department, Ken was a successful businessman, owning and managing numerous properties. He was an avid collector of all things related to the history of Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville is also where he met his wife, Anna Marie Van Asten, whom he married on February 14, 1985. Ken is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Anna Marie Van Asten; sons, Kevin Van Asten (Cora), Keith Van Asten (Melissa) and Kyle Van Asten; step children, Tim Starling, Tamala Starling, Sharon Nipper (Martin); brothers Donald, Leroy, James, John, Ivo; sisters, Grace Gebhart, Sister Cyril Marie, Betty Bast, Joyce Bruecker and Marcie Siebers and 13 grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Monday, February 13 in the Chapel of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 14th in St. Johns Presbyterian Church, 4275 Herschel St. Jacksonville, FL 32210. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd Jacksonville, FL. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society . Ken graduated from St. John High School, Little Chute in 1961. A man of many accomplishments, Ken was known to many as 'a simple man.' Serving in the U.S. Navy brought Ken to Jacksonville, FL. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he became a firefighter and rose to District Chief with the Jacksonville Fire Department, retiring in February, 2004. Ken was a successful businessman, owning and managing numerous properties. Ken was an avid collector of Jacksonville history. Surviving Ken is his beloved wife of 27 years, Anna Marie (Meyers) Van Asten; sons: Kevin (Cory), Keith (Melissa) and Kyle; step children: Tim Starling, Tamala Starling and Sharon (Martin) Nipper; and 13 grandchildren; brothers: Ivo (Nonie), Donald (Romunda), Leroy (Mary Therese), James (Bernice) and John (Jane); sisters: Grace Gebhart, Sister Cyril Marie Van Asten, Betty (Roy) Bast, Joyce (Phil) Bruecker, Marcy (Ron) Siebers; and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Van Asten. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Cyril and Gerald and sister Mary. The funeral service was at St. Johns Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville with interment in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Jacksonville.
