    • Stevens Point Daily Journal Tuesday, September 26, 1939 Rites at Appleton for George Besnah; Inquest Held Today
Private funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Appleton, with burial in Riverside Cemetery there, for George J. Besnah, 67, of Appleton, a former resident of Stevens Point and former Soo Line conducter, who was fatally injured Saturday at Kaukauna.
Besnah, a Chicago and North Western railway switchman, was crushed between an automobile and a switch engine at a crossing. He was standing in the middle of the crossing to halt vehicular traffic when a car driven by N. L. Ropp of Kaukauna failed to stop and wedged him between the left front fender of the car and the right front of the engine. Ropp, according to the police, said his brakes failed to function when he was about 75 feet from the crossing and he failed to see Besnah in trying to find out what was wrong with the brakes.
Besnah was born Aug. 1, 1873, at Oshkosh and lived at Appleton the last 16 years. He worked at Kaukauna the last four years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and had been in railroad service 49 years.
Surviving are his widow; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Brudage of Janesville, Mrs. Michael Flanagan and Mrs. Rudolph Konz of Appleton and Mrs. Howard Norton of Pensacola, Fla.; two sons, George of San Diego and Glenn of La Jolla, Calif.; two step-daughters, Elaine and Betty Kubitz of Appleton; 14 grandchildren and two sisters. Mrs. William Hathaway of Oshkosh and Mrs. Anthony Dan Pieterson of Milwaukee.
