- It is with great sadness that the family of Gerry Arts announces her passing on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Brewster Village at the age of 86. Gerry was born December 17, 1923, in Uden, Holland, daughter of the late Johannes and Johanna (Van De Ven) Verkuylen. She married the love of her life, John T. Arts, in their home town of Volkel on March 22, 1950. Thereafter Gerry and John immigrated first to Ormstown, Quebec, Canada, for 2 years and on to the United States to Clyde, MO, and then to Appleton where they spent most of their 58 years together.
Gerry was employed by St. Elizabeth Hospital for 5 years before retiring. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and worked as a volunteer in the Thrift Store for many years.
Gerry is survived by nine children, four sons: Arnie (Cheryl), Kaukauna; John (friend Annette), Kimberly; Mike (Brenda), Appleton; Paul (Lynn) Kimberly; five daughters: Joann (Dan) Mitchler, Kimberly; Mary Arts, Oshkosh; Theresa (Dale Judd) Arts, Middleton; Susan Arts, Green Bay; Elizabeth (Jim) Erickson, Westfield, IN; two brothers: John (Mein) Verkuylen, Australia; Wim (Jo) Verkuylen, Holland; four sisters: Anne Marie Verkuylen, Holland; Annie Wolters, Madison; Toas (Simon) VanDongen, Holland; Nolda (Frank) Hoefs, Canada; eighteen grandchildren: Bill (Lori) Arts, Angela (Scott) Huebner, Westley Arts, Matt (Alisa) Arts, Chris (Mycie) Arts, Laura Andrea and Rebekah Arts, Austin and Marcus Arts, Stacie Mitchler, Jake Jischke, Aaron Arts-Kottke, Matt (Kim) Judd, Conner, Noah and Dylan Erickson; eight great-great-grandchildren: Ryan Arts, Mikayla Arts, Emerson Huebner, Hunter Huebner, Faye Judd, Dylan Judd, Cayley Arts and Caitlin Arts; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Gerry Verkuylen; a sister, Johannie Verkuylen; a brother-in-law, Lambert Wolters; a sister-in-law, Grace Verkuylen; and Jim Jischke.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, 2010, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 222 E. Fremont St., with Rev. Robert Karuhn officiating. Entombment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the Sacred Heart Room at church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff at Lawrence Hall, Brewster Village, for the wonderful care Gerry received during her stay.
