- Sylvia M. Schumerth, our beloved mother, passed away at Bethel Home on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the age of 97. She was born on January 5, 1911 in DePere, Wisconsin, the daughter of Henry and Irene (Van Remortel) Coenen. Sylvia married Harold Schumerth on August 28, 1940 in DePere and lived in Algoma until 1943 when they moved to Oshkosh. Harold preceded Sylvia in death on July 29, 1988.
Before her marriage Sylvia was employed as a secretary/bookkeeper for Green Bay Motors. Many years later she was a secretary/bookkeeper for Dr. Graiewski and Dr. Leschke and at St. Peter School in Oshkosh. She was a long time member of St. Peter Catholic Church and the church choir, St. Peter Aquinas Club, and a member of the 20th Century Club.
Left to mourn her passing are four children, Mark (Cathy Porter) Schumerth of St. Pete Beach, Florida, Michael (Pat) Schumerth of Oshkosh, Mary (Robert) Rice of Genesee, Wisconsin, and Stephen (Susan) Schumerth of Culver, Indiana; a sister, Mary Coenen of Allouez, Wisconsin; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Marian Schumerth of DePere; 12 grandchildren, Jeff (Susanne) Schumerth, David (Lisa) Schumerth, Susan (Scott) Sellers, Lynne (Joel) Schaefer, Liz (Greg) Krome, Joanna (Jared) Vick, Shane Schumerth, Christopher Schumerth, Angela Schumerth, Daniel Schumerth, Amanda Schumerth, and Jennifer Porter; 9 great-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding Sylvia in death is her husband, parents, three sisters, Florence Biselx, Alice Coenen, and Dorothy Coenen; a brother, Clem Coenen; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 12 Noon in Most Blessed Sacrament Parish (St. Peter site, 435 High Ave.) with Reverend James Jugenheimer officiating. Entombment will be in Lake View Memorial Park Mausoleum. A time of visitation and sharing of memories will be held on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Expressions of sympathy may be given to Oshkosh Area Community Foundation for the Harold Schumerth Athletic Award Fund or to Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Sylvia's memory.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Elijah's Place and Bethel Home Special Care Unit for the outstanding care their mother received for the past six years.
