- John W. Vander Wyst, Jr.age 88, who resided at 300 N. Main Street, Butternut, WI, and formerly of Fence, WI., passed to eternal life on June 26, 2013.
John was born January 27, 1925, in Kaukauna, WI, the son of John W. Vander Wyst, Sr. and Anna (Zolpriester). After graduating from Kaukauna High School, he joined the U.S. Army serving from June 1943 to December 1945. He was a part of the greatest generation and landed on Utah Beach as a combat engineer. He was a highly decorated soldier with Bronze Star w/ V device, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and numerous other medals for valor and heroism. John had a distinguished career as a police officer for 30-plus years on the Appleton Police Dept. before he and his wife retired to Fence, WI. They traveled to spend time with their children and grandchildren. John enjoyed family, hunting, fishing and woodworking. He married Rita (Osowski) Oct. 14, 1948, at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Appleton, WI.
John is survived by sons, Gary, of Butternut, WI and Guy (Ann), of Menasha, WI daughters, Gail (Lee) Heath of Peoria, AZ and Gwen (Michael) Shaw of Colorado Springs, CO. Grandchildren: Wesley, Nick, Kyle, Troy, Michael, Megan, Matthew, John, Zachariah, Richard, Philip and Alex; six great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters and numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita; a daughter, Gloria; his parents; a brother, Elmer, and two sisters Amelia and Bonita.
There will be a visitation on Monday, July 8, 2013, at St. Joseph Parish, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, from 4:00 p.m. until the time of a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. The family will also greet relatives and friends on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, 521 U.S. Hwy. 8, Armstrong Creek, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Fence, WI.
