A gentle and loving heart, Rita M. Carey, passed away suddenly July 6, 2015, at St. Clare Hospital in Oconto Falls. Rita was born on the family farm, Town of Rockland in De Pere on May 3, 1928 to the late John and Petronella (Cornelisen) Wellens, the 9th of 10 children, and was very proud of her Dutch heritage. At the age of 18 after the death of her parents, she moved to Milwaukee and worked at Phoenix Hosiery. She then moved to Stiles to help care for her brother Bill's children and that is where she met Lester Carey, fell in love and married him on May 5, 1951, at St. Patrick's Church in Stiles. Together they raised seven children. He preceded her in death 10 years ago on July 5, 2005. Always a very hard worker, once her children were in school she worked at Liquid Carbonic, the bag factory, and then at Unlimited Services. Her Catholic faith was first in her life, praying the rosary daily, and making sure her children had a Catholic education. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish in Oconto. Her life revolved around her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and dearly loved her siblings, nieces and nephews. She always looked so forward to the annual Wellens family reunion. She loved having visitors, and her home was a most welcome place to be. You never left her house hungry or thirsty, her warmth and hospitality was outstanding. She was a very strong lady, surviving major surgery in April, was recovering well but God decided to call her home. She is leaving behind many broken hearts.

Rita is survived by four daughters and three sons; Diane (James) Younger, Karen (Ron) Tappa, Joanne (Gary) Moody, Anne (Tim) Burie; Dave (Debbi) Carey, Kevin (Barb) Carey, Richard (Faye) Carey, 21 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren,7 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great grandchildren her brother and his wife, Don and Carol Wellens, sister-in-law Rita Wellens, and very many special nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester, four brothers and spouses, Chris, Ray, Bill (Bonnie and Ruth), Tony (Eleanor), and Jerome (Beatrice) Wellens, three sisters, Regina (Tom) Delany, Lucille (Lee) Urban and Marion (Ed) Wehnes.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Gallagher Funeral Home, Oconto, from 4 PM to 9 PM Thursday July 9, 2015 with prayer services by Deacon Walter Kaszynski at 7:30 PM. Visitation will continue on Friday, July 10, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Rev. Bob Karuhn officiating. Burial will be at Oconto Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.gallagherfuneralhome.net.

A special thank you to Dr. S.J. Kumar and all his staff for their kindness and care for our mother, and all the staff in the emergency room and on the floor at St. Clare Hospital, your wonderful care will never be forgotten.
