    Notes
    • The Jarret family left profound marks engraved in our history, but we know them mostly for their nicknmaes, Beauregard and Vercheres. Fora long time we searched their origines. Many archivists looked into this problem. It is Mrs. Faribault-Beauregard, who was president for manyyears of the Societe Genealogique Canadienne-Francaise, who solved theenigma, taken from the files which were left to her by the dying FatherJean-Marie Beauregard, o.p.. The name Jarret is not the original [name]; it wouldbe a nickname attributed to a family in the region of Vignieu, in thedepartment of Dauphinee, (Today the department of Isere). When, in the middle of August 1665, the Aigle d'Or and la Paix anchored in Quebec, bringing to New France one of the companies of the Regiment Carignan-Sallieres, that of Capt.Antoine Pecaudy deContrecoeur: Andre Jarret, sieur of Beauregard, who was a lieutenant and Francois Jarret, sieur of Vercheres, with the grade of ensign. They wereprobably half-brothers. Their father was named Jean [Jarret], and their mother Perrette Sermette and Claude de Pecaudy, respectively. The 12-01-1676, Andre Jarret, sieur of Beauregard, married in Montreal Marguerite Anthiaume, daughter of Michel and of Marie Dubois. Michel Anthiaume was an officer in charge of the arrestationprocedures. It was a family from the parish of St-Nicolas-des-Champs, of which thechurch exists yet, at 254 rue St.Martin (3rd Quarter of Paris). Even though the lineage of Francois Jarret de Vercheres hasdied out in Canada, that of his half-brother will perpetuate. Andre andMarguerite had seven children. As an example of many soldiers and officers inthe Carignan Regiment, Andre Jarret de Beauregard chose to settle in the colony. Then, the 17-08-1674, the Governor Buade de Frontenac grantedhim three small islands situated at the end of the seigneurie of "sieur de Vercheres, his brother", and who already had the name of Beauregard,as he wanted to build and lodge. The Beauregard/Anthiaume couple had firstly, a daughter,Marguerite, baptized in Boucherville in Oct.1677;she died young, before 1692. Thenwas born Anne, baptized in Contrecoeur in Sept.1681; in 1700, she married Joseph Tetreau dit Ducharme, to whom she will give 12 children;shedied at Vercheres in 1746. A third daughter was then born to the couple,Marie, baptized at Contrecoeur in April 1683;sadly she died before reachingher tenth year. Let us follow the four sons. Francois-Alexandre, born inVercheres and baptized in Contrecoeur in Feb.1676. In 1706, in Boucherville, he marries Madeleine Pepin, daughter of Jean and of M.Madeleine Loiseau, (360-361-P). Four children will be born from this union, two of themare sons; only one Jean-Baptiste, will marry. We do not know the date ofthe biths of the following three, the records of Contrecoeur for thisperiod were destroyed by fire. Louis wedded in Longueuil, in 1709, Marguerite St.-Aubin, daughter of Adrien and of Jeanne-Marguerite Beloy, who gavehim eight children. He remarried a second time, no posterity. Joseph, thethird son, was the most prolific of the bunch, and he is the forefather ofmost of the Beauregard's; at Boucherville in 1714, he married firstly,Jeanne Joachim, daughter of Bernard and of Marguerite Pepin, with whom he had eight children; becoming a widower in 1724, he contracted a 2ndmarriage, with M.Charlotte Pinaud, daughter of Michel and of Simone Beaudet, (84-85-M), who gave him another dozen children. The fourth and lastson, Vincent, united his destiny, in 1716 to Catherine Pinaud, Charlotte's sister. 13 children will be born of this union. There is no trace of the burial act of Andre Jarret, sieur de Beauregard. He was massacred by the Iroquois in 1691, and doubtlessly, did not find his remains either.
