Arps, Gilbert H. "Gib"
Gilbert Arps, 96, Kaukauna, was called to the hands of the Lord on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009. He was surrounded by his loving family when he was called home. Gib was born near Shiocton on June 16, 1913, son of the late Henry and Olga (Hildebrandt) Arps. He graduated from the Kaukauna High School in 1931 and on Nov. 13, 1941, he married his sweetheart, the former Bernice Wiedenhaupt.
Gib served his country faithfully during and after World War II as a member of the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41, the Electric City VFW Post #3319 and the 40 et 8, where he was also Chef De'Gare. For over 40 years, Gilbert "Granny" worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna.
He enjoyed working with wood, making gifts for family and friends. Gilbert will also be remembered as being a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear to him was his lifelong faithful membership at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Kaukauna.
Gib is survived by his loving wife, Bernice Arps, Kaukauna; three sons, Kenneth (Jean) Arps, Freedom; Karl (Bonnie) Arps, Hortonville; and Kirk (Paula Winarski) Arps, Kaukauna; four grandchildren, Christopher (Sarah) Arps, Omro; Kelly (Tim) Hanson, Kaukauna; Kerry (Steve) Ebben, Combined Locks; and Bob (Melissa) Arps, Francis Creek; eight great-grandchildren, William, Collin and Lillian Arps; Matthew and Allison Hanson; Maya and Kyle Ebben; and baby Arps, who will join the family in April; two sisters, Ruth Wier and Leatrice (John) Bowman, both of Kaukauna; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Harke, Kimberly; and Grace Dercks, Kaukauna.
Gib was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Mildred Schmidt, Wilma Rausch, Beulah Jensch, Melvin Arps and Kenneth Arps.
The Christian Funeral for Gib will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at TRINITY EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 804 Grignon Street in Kaukauna, with the Rev. Mark Luetzow officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Gilbert's name.
The family would like to offer their thanks to the special men and women, especially his granddaughter, Kelly, who took such great care of Gib in the Cardiac Care Unit on 2South at Appleton Medical Center. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.
