- Karl J. Hohnberger, 67, Kimberly, died at his home on Friday, May 14, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Neenah, on Nov. 14, 1942, to the late Henry and Bernice (Wolfgram) Hohnberger. Karl married Margaret "Maggie" Verbeten at Holy Name of Jesus Parish on May 8, 1965.
Karl had served in various capacities for the Kimberly Kiwanis Club, the Village of Kimberly Police and Fire Commission, the Fox Valley Metro Police Commission and was a founding member of Kimberly's first Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Chapter. Those who knew Karl depended on, and often chuckled at, his uncontrollable need to research everything and share his knowledge with those around him. He always had the answer, even if you didn't pose a question! He had an incredible sense of humor that was an example of strength as he suffered through the ravages of a disease caused by his decision to smoke. As difficult as it was for his family to see him suffer, it was even more difficult to see the pain in his eyes as he watched his family agonize through his battle.
Karl is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maggie; children, Craig (Annette), Columbus, Ohio; and Cheryl (Rich) Riffe, Darboy; grandchildren, Lauren and Leah Hohnberger, Jake and Nick Riffe; siblings, Louise (Joseph) Ray, James (Sally) and Dan (Judy); sisters-in-law, Barb (Dale) Oliver and Mary (Paul) Birling; many nieces, nephews and friends. He is further survived by his very special friends, "Tom, Dick, and Harry" (Tom Landers, Dick Hedtke, Paul Sachs, Mike Wichmann and Paul and Judy DeYoung).
In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by his brother, Gary; and Maggie's parents, John and Harriet Verbeten.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2010, beginning at 10 a.m. until time of Mass at 12 noon at HOLY SPIRIT PARISH - KIMBERLY SITE (620 E. Kimberly Ave.) The Rev. David Beaudry, who Karl formed a special bond with in the past months, will officiate. Committal Holy Name of Jesus Cemetery.
As a special request, Karl's family would really appreciate you sharing your favorite memory of Karl in either the online guest book at www.oconnellfh.com, or the memory box at the celebration of his life.
