- Russell "Van" Vanderlois, 62, of Saluda, died on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at the Elizabeth House. He was the owner of Van's Chocolates in Hendersonville (North Carolina). His passion was his chocolates.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Peggy Vanderlois; two sons, Wayne Russell Vanderlois and his wife, Tammy, of FL and Bryan Rudolph Vanderlois of Laurel Park; one daughter, Christy L. Vanderlois and her daughter KatieMarie Vanderlois of Saluda as well as seven other grandchildren.
A service will be held in Appleton, WI, at a later date.

- In 1968 Peg and Russ Vanderlois were newly-weds. That Christmas, their finances were a little tight, so they decided to make homemade candy as gifts for the holiday season. Using recipes from Russs mother, who was widely known for her delicious chocolates and candies, their holiday treats were considered outstanding. Russ had grown up watching and helping his mother in the kitchen, so making sweets was nothing new. Everybody should have a chance to enjoy something this good, their friends urged.
So, a new business was born.
Two of the three Vanderlois children Bryan and Christy are now involved in the thriving business located in Hendersonville, North Carolina. They each have their specialties Christy is the caramel and toffee maker,Vans Chocolates was begun by making tasty treats in small batches. No mass production for Peg and Russ! And today, their family business focuses on making small batches of many types of candies and chocolates. They love to experiment with new ingredients and combinations. Just ask their many regular customers. This small-town chocolatier is a family-owned, family-run business that makes exceptional chocolates, often compared to European-quality confections. and Bryan specializes in truffles. The wonderful chocolates and confections at Vans Chocolates are handmade in their kitchen based on recipes that have been in the family for at least three generations.
