Mrs. Orry Schmalz [Bernice De Bruin] 1109 Lawe St., Kaukauna, age 78, died Sunday, February 19, 1995 as the results of a auto accident. She was born February 4, 1917 in Little Chute, the daughter of the late Frank and Anna [Van Dinter] De Bruin. She was a graduate of St. John High School, Little Chute and continued to play cards with some of her classmates up until the time of her death. Bernice married Orry Schmalz August 2, 1937 at St. John Catholic Church, Little Chute. She was active as a leader in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, past president and member of the Eagles, board member of Muscular Dystrophy Organization, past president and member of Kaukauna Community Hospital Auxiliary. She wrote articles for the Bicentennial published in the Kaukauna Times, a member of a Geneology Society. She was a member of the Dioceasan Council of Catholic Women and the Ladies Knights of Columbus. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Ladies of Holy Cross.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Orry Schmalz, four children; Larry and Linda Schmalz, Cedarburg; Lynn and Keith Verhagen, Combined Locks; Jim and Lianne Schmalz, La Crosse; Jill Prouse and special friend, Dave Brunette, Menasha; eleven grandchildren; Ginnie, Jeff and Becky Schmalz; Amy [Gerald] Weyenberg, Val Verhagen, Todd Verhagen, Heather Schmalz, Scott Schmalz, Jamie, Jennifer and Jason Prouse; two great grandchildren; Kendra and Ryan Weyenberg; two sisters and a brother in-law; Janette Wildenberg, Little Chute; Irma and Kermit Johnson, Racine.
She was preceded in death by two brothers; Harold and Richard De Bruin and a sister, Harriet Merabach.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 22, 1995 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Jack Mullarkey officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call at the Fargo Funeral Home, 404 W. Wisconsin Ave., Kaukauna frome 4 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday and after 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday until the cortege leaves for the church. Ther will be a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. A memorial fund has been established.
